Do you actually need an extension?
It might sound like a strange question coming from me, but sometimes the answer is… no!
When people get in touch, they often already have an extension in mind. They need more space, the house isn’t working, and naturally the answer feels like it must be to make it bigger. But one of the first things I like to do is take a step back and ask: do you actually need more space, or do you just need the space you already have to work a little harder? Because the two aren’t always the same thing…
I’ve seen homes with perfectly good square footage that still feel cramped simply because the layout isn’t working. A dining room nobody really uses, a hallway that takes up far too much room, a kitchen cut off from the rest of family life, or lots of little spaces that don’t quite have a purpose.
Sometimes moving a doorway, opening up a wall, rethinking the kitchen or creating some proper storage can make a surprisingly big difference, and sometimes, of course, an extension is absolutely the right answer! But even then, I’d always rather work out what the house genuinely needs before we start adding square metres to it. After all, every extra metre costs money to build, heat, furnish and maintain. Bigger isn’t automatically better!
For me, good design starts with understanding the slightly unglamorous bits of everyday life. Where do the school bags land? Where does everyone congregate while dinner is being made? Is there somewhere to escape to when you need five minutes of peace? Where does the laundry go? And which rooms are barely used at all? Those little details tell us far more about what your home needs than a floor area ever can.
So if your house is starting to feel as though you’ve outgrown it, don’t immediately assume you need a huge extension.
You might. But you might also discover that with some clever thinking, a small extension, or even simply a better layout, can give you the home you thought you needed to build.
And that’s always a lovely place to start :)
