More from a modest footprint
A thoughtful extension and ground-floor remodel of a four-bedroom semi-detached home, transforming an integral garage and underused side space into a lighter, more practical family home connected to its wrap-around garden.

The Brief
The clients wanted to make their existing three-bedroom home work considerably harder for family life, without extending simply for the sake of creating more floor area.
At ground floor, the integral garage occupied valuable space within the footprint while the existing kitchen and living accommodation lacked the generosity and practical supporting spaces the family needed day to day.
The brief was to create a larger kitchen and dining space alongside a separate utility and downstairs WC, while improving the way the ground floor flowed and making much more of the property's wrap-around garden
Design Response
The design began by looking at the existing footprint as a whole. Converting the integral garage into living accommodation allowed valuable space already contained within the house to become part of everyday family life, while a modest single-storey side extension provided the additional room needed to reorganise the ground floor properly.
Rather than simply following the existing walls, the new layout introduces a 45-degree angled wall between the extended accommodation and garden. This small architectural move became an important part of the scheme, helping the kitchen and dining space turn naturally towards the wrap-around garden and creating a much more intuitive flow between inside and out.
The remodel also creates the practical spaces that are often missing from smaller family homes, a dedicated utility and downstairs WC, while allowing the kitchen and dining area to become a more generous and sociable heart to the house.
At roof level, the hip roof extension and associated alterations were carefully integrated with the existing semi-detached property, allowing the house to evolve while retaining a balanced relationship with its original form.

Planning & Context
With a semi-detached house, alterations need to be considered not only in terms of the space they create internally, but also in relation to the proportions of the original building and its relationship with the adjoining home.
The proposals combined the conversion of the existing integral garage with a single-storey side extension, hip roof extension and carefully considered changes to the existing windows and doors. This allowed the ground floor to be substantially improved without requiring an oversized addition.
Planning permission was secured from Elmbridge Borough Council for the extension, garage conversion, roof alterations and changes to the fenestration, allowing the property to be remodelled around the family's everyday needs.
Outcome
The completed project demonstrates how much can be achieved without dramatically increasing the size of a house.
Space previously given over to the integral garage now contributes to everyday family life, while the side extension has allowed the ground floor to be reorganised around a larger kitchen and dining space, dedicated utility and downstairs WC.
Most importantly, the new layout responds to something that was already special about the property: its wrap-around garden. Turning the extended accommodation towards it has created a more natural relationship between the house and outside space, and a ground floor that feels considerably more generous, connected and intuitive to use.
It is a relatively modest intervention with a much bigger impact on the way the whole house works.
