If you’ve got little ones (or not-so-little ones) running around, you’ll know that your garden isn’t just a patch of green - it’s everything from a football pitch to a fairy kingdom to a place for quiet time while they tire themselves out. And just like the inside of your home, your outdoor space should grow and flex with your family. I’ve worked with so many families over the years who wanted to make their garden more usable, more inviting, and more adaptable - and the good news is, with a little planning, it’s totally doable.

When your children are small, it’s all about soft landings and clear sight lines. Think safe surfaces, space to roam (but not too far!), and maybe even a mud kitchen or sandpit tucked into a shady corner. But as they get older, their needs shift and your garden should be able to shift with them. I often suggest using modular elements, things that can be moved, repurposed or even grown out of gracefully. That climbing frame might become a quiet seating nook later. The trampoline spot could turn into a fire pit hangout. Flexibility is key.

Planting can help here too. You can create zones with raised beds or low hedging (great for defining play areas), veggie patches or quiet spots. And don’t forget storage! Outdoor toys have a way of multiplying, so a clever bench with hidden storage, or a little shed that doesn’t dominate the space, can be a game changer.

Of course, it’s not just about the children! Your garden should work for you too. A place to relax, entertain, or just sit and take the world in. So, it’s worth thinking ahead: where does the evening sun land? Could you squeeze in a small terrace for a glass of wine once bedtime rolls around? Designing with layers in mind (play now, lounge later) helps your outdoor space feel just as considered as the rest of your home!

Gardens should feel like a natural extension of your home and family life, not an afterthought. The best gardens aren’t just beautiful; they’re lived-in, loved, and ever-evolving.
