Let’s be honest, talking to your neighbours about building work isn’t always the easiest conversation to start. But it’s one of those small steps that can make a big difference.

Over the years, I’ve seen just how much smoother a project can run when there’s good communication from the outset. Extensions can stir up a lot of feelings, even if it’s just the worry about noise, dust, or how long the scaffolding will be up, so bringing your neighbours into the loop early can go a long way in keeping things friendly and stress-free.

Approach it the way you’d want to be approached. A quick knock on the door and a warm “we just wanted to let you know...” can be all it takes to show that you’re being thoughtful and considerate.

Share your plans clearly, let them know what to expect, and most importantly, give them a chance to ask questions or voice any concerns. You don’t have to have all the answers, but being open to the conversation shows a huge amount of goodwill!

What if they have concerns? Stay calm, be respectful, and really listen. Sometimes it’s just about clarifying a misunderstanding. Other times, it might be a genuine worry that can be addressed with a tweak to the plan or a promise to keep a shared path clear. These little gestures go a long way in preventing disputes or delays further down the line.

I’ve supported many clients through this part of the process and trust me, starting with openness usually sets the tone for a much more positive experience all round. In fact, I’ve seen neighbours end up cheering the build on, popping by to see the progress, and even asking for tips for their own future plans!

So, if you’re gearing up to extend and feeling a bit unsure about that conversation, take a deep breath and remember this is about building your home, not walls between people. A bit of kindness and clarity now can make the whole journey smoother for everyone involved!
